How are face-to-face and telephonic interviews different? How would you prepare for an interview on Skype?

Answer:

The purpose of an interview is to inquire into the candidate's personal and professional qualifications and abilities, depending upon the type of job. In a face-to-face interview, the interviewer is able to communicate directly with the candidate and able to assess or evaluate his qualifications, personality, work experience, and communicative abilities for the position he/she has applied for. The interviewer asks questions, evaluates and selects a suitable candidate. A face-to-face interview is an opportunity for an interviewee to communicate his/her abilities in front of the interviewer. But in a telephonic interview, the interviewer and the interviewee are unable to see each other and there is a limited scope for utilizing a candidate's non-verbal skills and have to depend only on articulatory (speaking) skills. So in a telephonic interview, the importance of the content of a candidate's answers increases when compared to a face-to-face interview.

Face-to-face interview enables to acquire factual information, attitudes, preferences and other information coming out during the conversation with the candidate. Thus, face-to-face interview ensures the quality of the obtained data and increases the response rate. The key difference with the face-to-face interview as compared to a telephonic interview is that the interviewer can see the candidate so the candidate can take advantage of this by spending some time on interview preparation such as intellectual preparation, preparing for effective verbal communication, physical preparation, gathering information about the organization, rehearse and practice, dressing appropriately, etc. The four areas need to concentrate on for telephonic interviews are phone manners, clarity of speech, voice tome or voice control and listening skills. In a telephonic interview, the interviewers are listening for signs of enthusiasm and interest in the hob. So the interviewee needs to make his/her voice sound energetic, warm, cheerful and clear. Listening carefully is especially important in a telephonic interview, where one can't rely on visual clues from the interviewers on the other hand in a face-to-face interview the interviewee can use visual clues.
